The Lord of Destruction

Baal, the Lord of Destruction, is one of the three Prime Evils, brother to Mephisto and Diablo. He first appears in Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, where he is the final boss the players have to face. The deity Bala, the spirit of Creation in the church of the Triune, is in reality Baal.

[edit] Background

Baal is one of Three; a Prime Evil, alongside his brothers Diablo and Mephisto. Together they rule over Hell. Though commonly called brothers, both by others and by themselves, there is nothing to suggest that anything gave birth to Baal or his brothers; they seem to have existed forever, or at least as long as the Universe. They have been at war with Heaven ever since the beginning of time, with neither side ever gaining the upper hand for long. This endless stalemate eventually tired the Lesser Evils Andariel, Azmodan, Belial, and Duriel. They overthrew the three Prime Evils and banished them to the mortal realm of Sanctuary. There they were hunted down by an order of mages called the Horadrim, an alliance of all mage clans, who had been united against the Three by order of the archangel Tyrael. Eventually, the Three were captured and imprisoned within three separate soulstones, and hidden from the world.

Baal was chased and finally confronted in the deserts of Aranoch. The Horadrim managed to defeat him, but during the encounter, Baal's destructive nature shattered the Soulstone that would be his prison. It was during this moment that Tal Rasha, leader of the Horadrim, stepped forward. Knowing that the stone would not contain the Lord of Destruction after its sundering, Tal Rasha volunteered to complete the prison with his own body. Selflessly sacrificing himself, Tal Rasha was buried far out in the desert in one of seven identical tombs, hidden in a valley where he would hopefully never be found.

The plan worked, and Baal remained chained in the tomb, unable to break free. Tal Rasha had thought that he could match the will of the Prime Evil, but pride had blinded him. It wasn't long before Baal had complete control over the mortal mage - including his knowledge and memories - but, trapped as he was, there was nothing Baal could use this information for.

In Diablo II, Diablo, with the help of Marius, travels to the tomb and frees his brother. Released from his bonds, Baal first travels with Diablo to Kurast, where they set their eldest brother, Mephisto, free. After that, Baal travels to Mount Arreat. Through Tal Rasha, he has learned that this is the location of the Worldstone, and he invades the mountain with a demonic army in the expansion pack to Diablo II in the hopes of corrupting the stone, opening the way for Hell to invade Sanctuary. In the Worldstone Chamber, he is ultimately killed by a band of heroes.

[edit] Physical Appearance

The Lord of Destruction is almost spider-like in his appearance. When confronted in Diablo II, Baal moves on four insectoid legs.

Compared to his brother Diablo, Baal still retains some humanoid features, most likely from his inhabiting of Tal Rasha's body. Granted, it is only his upper torso, which is pale, emaciated, and skeletal.

Most likely one of the most recognizable traits of Baal is his Festering Appendages, tentacles that manifest in various places on his body. In battle, Baal summons these from the ground to impede the player's path. Similarly, in the opening movie sequence to Diablo II: Lord of Destruction, Baal conjures these appendages from his hands to gruesomely slay a Barbarian.

[edit] Powers and Abilities

Similar to Mephisto, Baal tends to be more sorcerous than Diablo. However, while Mephisto tends to focus on Lightning themed abilities, Baal has skills with a cold trend.

Besides his powerful Hoarfrost ability that players confront, Baal also uses his Festering Appendages to many uses, as stated previously.

[edit] Trivia

Baal was voiced by Milton James in both the cinematics and in-game, although in the credits, he is credited under his alternate name, Richard Barnes, and under his real name, Milton James.
