Demons
From Diablo Wiki
Demon is the collective name for all entities and creatures living in the Burning Hells. There are a host of different forms of demons, ranging from weak and animalistic in their intelligence, such as the Fallen, to incredibly strong and powerful Prime Evils. All demons are selfish beings who value their own existence above all else and continuously seek power and dominion over those they deem to be weaker.

Great Evils
Great Evil is a collective term applied to the most powerful of demons.
Prime Evils
- For main article, see Prime Evils
The three Prime Evils, and known as the Three or sometimes the Brothers, are the rulers of Hell and the most powerful of all demons. Together they have led the forces of the Burning Hells against the High Heavens since the beginning of time. All demons fear the wrath of the Prime Evils, yet some still try to plot against them. Only once have they been challenged however, and that happened when the Lesser Evils banded together and banished the Brothers to Sanctuary. That directly set in motion the events that would lead up to the three games.
Lesser Evils
Despite the name, the Lesser Evils are far from weak; they are only lesser in comaprison to the Prime Evils. There are four known Lesser Evils, but what actually entitles a demon to the title of "Lesser Evil" is unclear. There may be more that we have no heard of.
These four overthrew the Brothers and banished them to Sanctuary, where they were subsequently hunted down and imprisoned with in the Soulstones. Since then however, Andariel and Duriel both joined forces with the three Prime Evils, and it is unclear why Belial and Azmodan did not. They are supposed to be fighting a civil war with each other in Hell.
Additional Evils
There is currently thought only to be seven Great Evils, but there has been some questioning as to whether there are more which we have not heard of yet.
One likely contender to be heightened to the status of Evil is Lilith. While no one knows if all demons are spawned in the same way, we know some are capable of giving birth. Lilith is said to be Andariels mother, and seeing as she is the mother of the Nephalem, the first generation of humans, we know she is one of the demons who can have children.
Lilith is also the daughter of Mephisto, and if that is enough to be considered a Lesser Evil, then Lucion, her brother, would also be included. This is as of now all speculation.
Regular Demons
There are no other named ranks in Hell. All other demons serve the aforementioned Great Evils directly or indirectly through another more powerful demon. We do know of several demons who are factors of power in their own right.
- Assur, leader of a demon army in the short story Demonsbane. Favoured of Diablo, he is near impervious to damage.
- Astrogha, a spiderlike demon serving Diablo. He has a major role in both The Sin War and Moon of the Spider.
- Gulag, a shifting servant of Baal. Appearing of equal status to Atrogha, he was eventually defeated by Uldyssian.
- Hephasto, a master smith of Hell who works at the Hellforge. As the Hellforge is the only place where the Soulstones could be destroyed, it is very likely that Hephasto had a high rank within Hell.
- Kabraxis, the main villain in The Black Road. Kabraxis is mentioned to have become so powerful he was a threat to the Three.
- Shenk the Overseer, the commanding officer of the Baal's armies laying siege to Mount Arreat during the events of Diablo II: Lord of Destruction.
- Xazax, a powerful demon in the novel Legacy of Blood. He transforms a mortal army into demons, and is personally dealt with by Diablo at the end, which would suggest some form of power if the Lord of Terror bothers to deal with him in person.
