The Lord of Hatred

Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred, is one of the three Prime Evils. He is the eldest of the Three. He is depicted as a cunning villain in the Diablo series, most notably Diablo II. The deity Mefis, the spirit of love in the church of the Triune, is in reality Mephisto.

He is the father of Lucion and Lilith, and by extension, the grandfather of Andariel.

Background

Mephisto is one of Three; a Prime Evil, alongside his brothers Diablo and Baal. Together they rule over Hell. Though commonly called brothers, both by others and by themselves, there is nothing to suggest that anything gave birth to Mephisto or his brothers; they seem to have existed forever, or at least as long as the Universe. They have been at war with Heaven ever since the beginning of time, with neither side ever gaining the upper hand for long. This endless stalemate eventually tired the Lesser Evils Andariel, Azmodan, Belial, and Duriel. They overthrew the three Prime Evils and banished them to the mortal realm of Sanctuary. There they were hunted down by an order of mages called the Horadrim, an alliance of all mage clans, who had been united against the Three by order of the archangel Tyrael. Eventually, the Three were captured and imprisoned within three separate soulstones, and hidden from the world.

Mephisto was the first of his brothers to be captured, and his Soulstone was buried beneath the desert of Aranoch. A third of the Horadrim stayed to guard his tomb until his brothers were captured as well. Years later, Mephisto's Soulstone was moved to Kurast, where the Horadrim built the Guardian Tower in order to keep Mephisto imprisoned. The original plan was for the Horadrim to continue to stand guard, but as the threat of the Three vanished with their capture, the order could not keep together, and the duty of safeguarding the Soulstone was entrusted to the Church of Zakarum. Slowly but steadily, however, Mephisto was able to reach out from his prison and corrupt the minds of his gaurdians. He corrupted the Zakarum priests of the temple and used them to shatter his Soulstone into seven shards, freeing him somewhat in the process. Six of the shards were put into Zakarum archbishops, the members of the High Council. The seventh (and largest) shard was inserted into the then-Que-Hegan, Sankekur, the leader of the Zakarum faith, who became Mephisto's embodiment in the mortal plane.

During the events of Diablo II, Mephisto had exerted complete control over Kurast, its inhabitants, and the surrounding countryside, leaving only the docks as a safe haven. A group of adventurers battled their way through the city and down to the bottom of the Guardian Tower, where they slew the Prime Evil. His soulstone was later shattered at the Hellforge.

Physical Appearance

Like the other Prime Evils, Mephisto has not been seen yet in his true demonic form, although he appears as a fightable character in Diablo II, the player still fights only an embodiment of Mephisto (in Sankekur) and not the true Demon Lord himself. The only descriptions we have of Mephisto are from the third book of the Sin War trilogy, The Veiled Prophet.

"... The shadow coalesced somewhat into a tall, macabre shape that instantly brought to Mendeln’s mind the monstrous morlu or, worse yet, their heinous master, Lucion, who, like Lilith, was also offspring of this sudden and dread visitor ...
... A green, scaly hand thrust forth from the shadow to condemn Inarius ...
... A hint of great, sharp teeth momentarily flashed into sight where the demon’s head should have been ..." - The Veiled Prophet (Sin War Trilogy)

In Diablo II, compared to his brothers, Mephisto is ethereal in appearance. In the movie sequence and in-game, he appears as a ghostly, skeletal spectre.

In his movie sequence appearances, Mephisto appears as little more than a skeletal torso in a misty white cloud, although his skull appears almost alien. The body is probably Sankekur's, after he underwent a transformation similar to the Dark Wanderer into Diablo. It is unknown why Mephisto's mortal image lacks the lower half of his body, but the rest of his body has taken a form very similar to his description in the Sin War novels, although with the human skin and vague facial features intact. In his transformation, Mephisto's body has taken a very heinous form, with the skin and muscle from his hands missing, and his fingers having grown longer and bonier like their description in the novels. Besides these, he has spruted four fleshy tentacles from his back and has two horns growing straight upwards from his skull. He completely lacks a nose but the rest of his face still resembles a human.

He utilizes a blue energy, possibly connected to his blue Soulstone, in concordance with his brothers to open the Infernal Gate.

In the games

By Diablo II, Kurast is already corrupted and rotting away. The player does manage to destroy Mephisto and his Council, and ultimately destroys his soulstone in the Hellforge.

Powers and Abilities

Accordingly, Mephisto is more reliant on magic than the rest of his brothers. Using primarily Lightning, Cold, and Poison spells, Mephisto is a difficult foe to face, although his melee attacks are fairly weak.

Perhaps most notable is his "Skull" missile, a white projectile he fires at players and their Hirelings, capable of doing fatal amounts of damage with one hit. Since these Skull Missiles are non-elemental, simply avoiding them is a player's only option.

Mephisto's evil is so great that his hatred causes the dead themselves to rise from their graves: this is why he is considered lord of Undead monsters as well. When fighting Mephisto, a player will often encounter Restless Spirits that erratically appear, attack, and disappear. Although they can be vanquished, doing so is difficult and does not wield much reward.
