Rogue (Diablo II)
From Diablo Wiki
The Rogue is a female archer and warrior who fights for the Sisterhood of the Sightless Eye. They keep watch over the Rogue Monastery which guards the passage over the mountains to the East. These highly skilled archers employ ancient Eastern philosophies that develop an "inner sight" that they use both in combat and to circumvent dangerous traps that they may encounter. Known only as wandering Rogues in the West, the Sisters conceal their secret affiliation by posing as simple travelers. Many pompous fools have made the mistake of underestimating these steel nerved women in combat and paid a terrible price for their vanity.

[edit] Diablo I
The Rogue was one of the three playable characters in Diablo I that ventured into the depths of the Tristram Cathedral to slay Diablo, the Lord of Terror. The strange events that transpired in Khanduras caught the attention of many of these Rogues. They came from as far as the Eastern dunes to test their skills against the dark evil that was said to be lurking in Tristram. Although not as powerful in close combat as the Warrior, the Rogue is the undisputed master of the bow. A skilled Sister can send a stream of arrows at an opponent, each fired with a seemingly careless precision. The innate sixth sense that all Rogues seem to possess also allows them to sense trapped fixtures, and aids them in attempt to disarm these traps.
[edit] Diablo II
The Rogues were a hire-able band of mercenaries who, since the times of Diablo's first defeat, had retreated out of their now corrupted Rogue Monastery. After the Dark Wanderer had traveled East through the Rogue Monastery, he summoned the Lesser Evil Andariel to close the way behind him. Andariel not only sealed the way, but corrupted and destroyed many of the Rogue sisters. The Rogues and their order, named the Sisterhood of the Sightless Eye, have now moved west of their Monastery, living in small encampments in the plains of Khanduras. One such encampment is the Rogue Encampment. After you defeat Blood Raven and earn Kashya's trust, she allows you to hire her Rogue sisters as Rogue mercenaries to aid you against Andariel.

[edit] Trivia
Bloodraven was hinted to be the Rogue character from Diablo I
Disputed: Doubtful as the Rogue (the corrupted hero) is the Dark Wanderer in Diablo II. The gender is irrelevant here as the final cutscene in Diablo I clearly shows the female rogue sticking the soul stone in her forehead.
Dispute the disputed: The final cutscene in Diablo I would show whatever character you played sticking the soulstone into their forehead.
To further the dispute: The cutscenes in Diablo II portray the Dark Wanderer as the Warrior. So it is entirely possible that Bloodraven is indeed the Rouge.

This will need to be merged eventually.
The Dark Wanderer is the "Hero" from Diablo 1, be it a rogue, sorcerer or warrior. For obvious reason they couldn't make a video of all three as only 1 exist. If the rogue/warrior/sorcerer isn't the Dark Wanderer there would be no Diablo II (i.e. Diablo would have not made the journey East.
Keep in mind that while Diablo is a multiplayer game it's played from the stand point of a single hero with a single story line. This is why there will not be many characters customization in Diablo III. You are all the same barbarian, you are all the same necromancer and so on. I suppose they made a choice to go with the warrior as the Dark Wanderer, since they had to pick one hero. However since only one storyline actually exist, the rogue doesn't know of the warrior.
So whatever your character class was in Diablo I you become the Dark Wanderer
