Appearance
Tyrael appears as a man dressed in golden robes and armor. His face is constantly shrouded in black, and his wings are shapes like white glowing tentacles, always gently swaying in the air. Tyrael also carries a sword with him, but lacks other personal objects.
Rank and Power
Tyrael is a member of the Angiris Council, the ruling body of the angels. As such, he has no direct superior, there is no mention of God. Nevertheless, Tyrael has disagreed with the will of the Council on several occassions, often by helping out the human forces struggling against the forces of Hell, and as such, been disobedient to the consensus of the Council.
Previous views
Tyrael has not always been like this. During the Sin War when Heaven first discovered the existence of Sanctuary, Tyrael was of the firm belief that it was an abomination that had to be destroyed, and he stopped at nothing to thwart the forces of Hell from gaining any form of advantage through humanity. However, after Uldyssian defeated Inarius and a vote was cast for the future of Sanctuary, Tyrael switched sides and sided with the two other Angiris members, Auriel and Itherael, to let Sanctuary continue to exist.
Theories and Speculation
Tyrael has been the focus of many plot-twisting theories over the years due to his enigmatic character and timely appearances as well as apparently foolish actions. Below are listed several strange events, and the possible conclusions one can draw from them.
Marius
It's a mystery why Tyrael, a very powerful archangel and very much aware of the power the Three possessed, left Baal's soulstone in the hands of Marius, a weak and easily manipulated mortal. On top of that, he sent Marius on quest to enter Hell and destroy the stone in the Hellforge. Seeing how challenging it is for the player to visit Hell, it is hard to understand Tyrael's reasoning behind this mission he gave to Marius.
Tyrael wanted Marius to fail
This seems very reasonable. The quest was doomed to fail, there's simply no way Marius could ever have made it through Hell in order to smash the soulstone. Proponents argue that this is proof Tyrael has a hidden agenda.
Tyrael did it on purpose
The other side of the coin is that the apparent truth is very seldom the real truth when it comes to the angels. Very seldomly are we ever given any straight insight into their plans and motives, and it is possible that Tyrael planned to protect Marius later on, or that it was so unlikely for Tyrael to give the Soulstone to Marius that he hoped Baal would never contemplate it.
The Worldstone
The Worldstone is another often discussed topic. What exacly happened when the stone was destroyed, and was it really necessary to shatter it? We know that the Worldstone held up the barriers protecting Sanctuary from Hell (and Heaven), and that destroying it would cause these barriers to fall; we also know that in the past, the Worldstone was used to supress the innate magical abilities of all humans.
Tyrael told us that Baal's corrupting touch would render the Worldstone useless in protecting Sanctuary if allowed to continue to corrupt, and that the effects were irreversible. The true effect is not yet known.
It is also unknown how the actual act of destruction, coupled with the following explosion, would have affected Tyrael.
Trivia
Tyrael is voiced by Ed Trotta, who also provided the voice for Izual and The Ancients.
